Betfair Signs Partnership Deal with Jadestone
Another lucrative deal has been signed in the online gambling industry, following the announcement that the Swedish gaming company, Jadestone, has partnered with the UK-based Betfair. Bodog Seeks Official Entry into UK Market
One of the gambling industry's most popular companies, Bodog, has applied for an official license to operate a remote casino and conduct betting activities in the United Kingdom. NBA: "Strengthen Prohibition Against Internet Gambling"
The powerful National Basketball Association (NBA), one of the strongest sports organizations in the United States, paid a consulting company $330,000 last year in order to lobby congress over a number of issues, including the need to "strengthen prohibition against internet gambling". McGuirewoods Consulting firm was paid $50,000 in the first half of 2007, and a further $280,000 in the second half, in a bid to push congress to preserve the ban on sports gambling and to strengthen the ban on online wagering.
NBA's moves were made public under a 1995 federal law that requires lobbyists to disclose any activities that may influence legislative bodies. It is thought that the NBA's lobbying comes in the wake of mounting pressure from local and international sectors for the US to do away with the controversial UIGEA that essentially bans online gambling in the country.

EU Examines Member State Online Casino Laws
The European Commission has decided to launch an investigation into the online gambling laws of two of its member states - Germany and Sweden - over fears that these countries are going against regional free trade treaties. All sixteen German states recently voted in new legislation that essentially bans online gambling to protect its state monopoly on the industry. The online casino gambling advertising sector was also badly hit by the new laws.
The European Commission also questioned Sweden's policy, which also favors state run sites and businesses. A Commission statement read: "A Member State cannot invoke the need to restrict its citizens' access to betting services if at the same time it incites and encourages them to participate in state lotteries, games of chance or betting which benefits the state's finances."
The European Commission has, to date, queried the policies of more than ten member states.
